Eta History
Founded on May 15, 1851 at Wesleyan Female College in Macon, GA, Alpha Delta Pi holds the distinction of being the first secret society in the world for college women. The original name of the sorority was "The Adelphian Society", coming from the Greek word "Adelphean" meaning "sister". Eugenia Tucker Fitzgerald founded Alpha Delta Pi along with five of her closest friends: Ella Pierce Turner, Octavia Andrew Rush, Elizabeth Williams Mitchell, Sophronia Woodruff Dews, and Mary Evans Glass. These women, along with thirteen others, made up the first chapter at Wesleyan, which was the first college in the world to grant charter degrees to women. They took their open motto, "We live for each other." They developed a ritual, oath, and badge, all things which we recognize through the sorority today. They also chose colors, azure blue and white, as further symbols of their ideals, as well as an official flower and mascot--the woodland violet and lion. The qualifications for membership have remained unchanged through the years--scholarship, high principles of behavior, and true friendships.
The Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi was founded March 21, 1907, making it the second oldest women's sorority at the University of Alabama. Eta was the first active chapter of Alpha Delta Pi in the state of Alabama. and the seventh chapter in the country. In 2007, the Eta Chapter celebrated 100 years of sisterhood with its current members, alumni, and international officers.

Sisterhood
Welcome to the Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi!
Across the nation and on Alabama's campus, ADPi's are known as bright, classy, and fun young women that share a sisterhood unlike any other. "We live for each other", our open motto, is the foundation of Alpha Delta Pi's sisterhood. Out motto describes the close bond formed between each ADPi sister. These ties go deeper and last longer than any friendship ever could. From the moment our new Alphas step onto out lawn on Bid Day, they are welcomed with open arms immediately becoming part of our family. With every achievement, competitions, discouragement and new experience, each ADPi knows she can count on her sisters to be by her side.
We experience many momentous events together from birthdays to wedding engagements, to academic accomplishments and job success. And, it is also comforting to know that there is always a
sister wanting to do what you are in the mood for,
whether it is studying, going out on the town, making
Target runs, watching Grey's Anatomy, or just
hanging out. Either way it is clear that the
sisterhood of Alpha Delta Pi extends far beyond
your college years.
Philanthropy
Crimson Tidings
The Ronald McDonald House
The 1st Annual Crimson Tidings is a new philanthropy event hosted by Alpha Delta Pi. This event is a self-guided tour of the houses of Alabama's Sorority and Fraternity Row decorated for the holiday season. This year we raised over $5,000 to give to organizations of each house's choosing. For more information, please visit www.crimsontidings.com
Since 1979, Alpha Delta Pi has been committed to serving Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Alpha Delta Pi has contributed over $2 million to this worthwhile effort. RMHC supports Ronald McDonald Houses in local communities and funds grants to other nonprofit organizations whose programs focus on children in need.
Today, 271 Ronald McDonald Houses in 30 countries and regions help keep families with seriously ill or injured children together when they need it most by offering them a comfortable, temporary residence in proximity to a medical facility. In addition to donating money to this incredible organization, collegiate chapters and alumnae associations spend their time and energy volunteering at local Ronald McDonald Houses.
The Eta Chapter of Alpha Delta Pi is looking forward to the arrival of a Ronald McDonald Room at our Local DCH hospital located right across from Alabama's campus. This will allow us even more of an opportunity to help an amazing organization in our own backyard.

The Alpha Delta Pi Foundation
The work of the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation, Inc. began more than 150 years ago when our founders chose the open motto, "We live for each other." This motto has guided young women into their adult lives and created the awareness that we, as a sisterhood, can help one another and our communities.
The mission of the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation is to provide essential resources for Alpha Delta Pi Sorority's educational, leadership, and philanthropic activities which improve the lives of women and the communities they serv.

Scholarship
At Alpha Delta Pi, scholarship is one of our top priorities. In addition to great campus involvement and good Greek relations, an ADPi knows that it is important to excel academically too. Alpha Delta Pi constantly has one of the highest GPAs of all the Alabama sororities. ending the Fall 2008 semester with a house average of 3.27. Our Freshmen Pledge class is required to complete six study hall hours per week during their fall semester, helping with the academic transition between high school and college. The scholarship chair and her team encourage good grades by granting a pearl or a good ball (these attach to the pin and guard) in addition to a monetary reward at the end of the semester. An ADPi can always rely on her sisters to support her academically!
Campus Involvement
The involvement and leadership within Alpha Delta Pi continues to grow each year. At the University of Alabama, ADPi is known and recognized for their outstanding involvement on campus. We have sisters in almost every organization at the Capstone . . .

Swaps
Date Parties
The most memorable parties of your college years are ADPi Swaps. Swaps are weekly mixers between our sorority and a fraternity. We swap with all fraternities and are the most popular way to meet new people, especially your newest sisters. Every Fall Swap has a theme that the Freshman pledge class dresses up for. Favorites have been 80's, Graffiti, Jungle Book, Biker, So Icy, Toga, and Country Club. By dressing up and having fun, you get really close to your sisters!
Being invited to an ADPi date party is the envy of every guy on campus. Recent date parties have been Woodstock, Rave, Grab-A-Date, Tacky Christmas, and Rags-to-Riches. Themes change every year so it's always a surprise! The sorority rents out a location and a band for our private party. Some of our favorite bands are Az-Izz, Fly By Radio, and Johnny T & Due South. Getting ready with your sisters is always so much fun! Date parties are a great way to set your sisters up with a guy...who knows what could come from it!
Mallard Ball is always the favorite Fall party of the year! Unique to Alpha Delta Pi, every chapter around the country has their own Mallard Ball party. ADPi's and their dates dress up in full head-to-toe hunting camo and orange and ride charter busses to Faunsdale, AL to dance the night away. Even though it is not a traditional "ball", Mallard Ball is so laid back and is the best time to have fun with your ADPi sisters
Alpha Delta Pi's only black-tie formal, Black Diamond is held in the Spring to honor our newest members and their amazing contribution to the Eta Chapter.
